The All Progressives Congress on Monday, accused President Goodluck Jonathan of running an incompetent and fillipant presidency.
It said the Presidency was chasing shadows instead of dealing with genuine issues of governance.
The APC said this in response to earlier accusations that leading figures in the APC were inconsistent on national issues.
In a paper titled, “Nigeria in 2014:
Facts Versus Fiction,” written by the Special Assistant to the
President, New Media, Mr. Reno Omokri, the Presidency had described the
opposition and its leadership as a bunch of “hypocrites” who would stop
at nothing to “secure political power by whatever means necessary.”
But in a statement issued in Lagos by
its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC
said the Jonathan-led Presidency lacked the moral authority to accuse
its leaders.
The party described the administration
as “incompetent” and “flip plopping” because its leaders were not only
respectable but also patriotic.
The statement reads in part “The
Presidency is behaving like a punch-drunk boxer who, clearly dazed by a
barrage of right-on-target punches from the opponent, ran to the ropes
and started punching the air, when he should be thinking of a comeback
strategy.
“This Presidency is definitely dazed
from its own failings, the collapse of the party that sired it and the
opprobrium being poured on it daily by Nigerians who are grossly
disappointed at its woeful performance and clear lack of direction. We
are therefore not surprised that in addition to incompetence and
cluelessness, it has now resorted to twisting facts.”
The APC noted that its statement of
December 13, 2013 titled “APC to Jonathan: Don’t take Nigeria back to
the Abacha days” challenged President Jonathan to address former
President Olusegun Obasanjo’s allegations that he had put 1,000
Nigerians on a ‘political watch-list.’
This, it said, was in addition to an
allegation that his administration was training snipers at the same
facility where Abacha’s killer squad was trained.
According to the APC, its grouse with
the President’s reply is not in his response but his lack of decorum,
bearing in mind that the Presidency is an institution that should not be
dragged into the mud, while the President is only a tenant.
On the accusation of inconsistency and
double standards leveled against its leaders, the APC said the
Presidency was simply “shooting the breeze.”
But the Presidency said the APC would
go to any length to denigrate the office of the President because its
leaders were aware of the fact that they had no alternative to the
present administration.
The Special Adviser to the President on
Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, said this in an interview with one
of our correspondents.
He said the only thing the APC leaders were interested in was to grab power by all means.
He said unfortunately for them however, Nigerians knew them for who they were and would not vote for them.
He said, “Lai Mohammed does not know
what he is talking about. The APC is not a party Nigerians will go for,
so he will do everything to denigrate the President and pull him down.”
