“Three fishing boats have sunk since Sunday afternoon,” Chinese state news agency Xinhua news agency said on Monday.
The ships were hit by Typhoon Wutip on Sunday as they navigated gales near the Paracel Islands, about 330 km from China’s island province of Hainan, the agency said, citing sources with the Hainan maritime search and rescue centre.

A plane has skidded off the runway at Rome's Fiumicino airport after its landing gear malfunctioned during a thunderstorm.
Nobody was injured in the incident, according to the ANSA news agency.
The plane, an Airbus A320 belonging to flagship carrier Alitalia, had flown from Madrid with 151 passengers on board.
It came to rest on its side near the runway.
The national air transport safety agency has opened an investigation into the incident, and officers have been sent to examine the plane.

Dozens dead, 100 missing in Nigeria boat Accident


Nigerian authorities on Saturday were looking for survivors after a boat carrying traders capsized, killing at least 42, an emergency agency official said.
The overloaded boat was on the Niger River between two villages in north-central Nigeria when it capsized Friday evening, said Mohammed Shaba, head of the state emergency agency.
The boat was carrying 150 people, of which 42 were confirmed dead, eight were rescued and 100 were missing, he said.

A directive, which purportedly came from the Presidency, insisting on female ministerial nominees from Lagos State, is causing a stir in the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Leaders of the party in Lagos, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH, were divided on whether or not the directive came from the President and the ability of female ministers to help the PDP win the state in 2015.
A leader of the party, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said they were not happy with the directive.

"It showed little intent to defraud and great intent to resolve the situation with the tax office instead of entering into a bitter battle with the state," the lawyer said.
Crowds of reporters and fans gathered outside the court where first Messi's father Jorge Messi and then the player himself were quizzed on charges of evading tax on the striker's image rights to the tune of €4.16 million.

American international Aron Johannsson scored AZ's second-half winner after a defensive error to leave PSV with 15 points from eight games ahead of Alkmaar who are up to fourth on 13.
AZ had taken the lead when Nick Viergever got on the end of a corner after 21 minutes before PSV levelled through Memphis Depay's freekick in the 35th before Johannsson struck.

Borussia Dortmund's German international defender Marcel Schmelzer is expected to be out for three weeks after a suffering a thigh injury in training, the club said on Saturday.
The left-back tore a fibre in the back of his left thigh during Friday's training for Saturday's Bundesliga match at home to Freiburg.
The injury will rule him out of Germany's final World Cup qualifiers against Ireland in Cologne on October 11 and Sweden four days later in Stockholm.

Militants 'hired Kenyan mall shop




The militants who led the attack on a Kenyan mall hired a shop there in the weeks leading up to the siege, senior security sources have told the BBC.
This gave them access to service lifts at Westgate enabling them to stockpile weapons and ammunition.
Having pre-positioned weapons they were able to re-arm quickly and repel the security forces.
Sixty-seven people are known to have died in the four-day siege. Kenya's Red Cross says 61 others are still missing.
