Giovanni Segura knocked out Herman Marquez in the twelfth round of their WBO flyweight title eliminator in Hermosillo, Mexico, at the weekend.
After a toe-to-toe battle between former champions, Marquez left the ring on a stretcher. He was knocked down in the fourth and eleventh rounds before Segura finished the bout 1 minute 57 seconds into the final round.
Segura improved his record to 31-3-1, including 27 wins inside the distance. Marquez, the locan favourite, dropped to 36-4, with 23 knockouts.
Earlier, Miguel Berchelt (20-0; 17) knocked out Omar Estrella (15-6; 13) in the fifth round of a super-featherweight bout.
In Hull, England, Lucas Browne stopped Richard Towers in the fifth round of an eliminator to challenge for the Commonwealth heavyweight title.
Brown is undefeated after 18 bouts, of which he won 16 inside the distance. Towers now stands at 14-1, with 11 knockouts.
Browne took control in the opening round and knocked down Towers in the fifth round before the referee stepped in after 51 seconds of the round.
Lightweight Tommy Coyle moved his record to 17-2; 7 when he stopped John Simpson (25-10; 11) in the seventh round to win the vacant IBF intercontinental title. Simpson was knocked down twice before the fight was stopped.
Luke Campbell, who won an Olympic gold medal in London last year, won his third professional bout when he stopped Lee Connelly (2-6; 0) in the fifth round of a lightweight bout – his third victory inside the distance.
Three notable fights took place in Thailand at the weekend. In Bangkok, Padjai Yongyuthgym (16-1-2; 11) knocked out Ricardo Roa (11-8-2; 3) in the first round to claim the PABA super-featherweight title.
In Hai Yai, Oleydong Sithsamerchai outpointed Giovanni Escaner over 12 rounds of a bout for the WBC international super-flyweight title. Oleydong improved his record to 50-1-1, with 17 knockouts. Escaner dropped to 10-1; 6.
And in Chachoengsao, Tor Buamas (14-0; 11) won the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title when he knocked out Alvoin Bais (13-2; 3) in the fifth round.
