The
Federal Government, on Friday, approved the 2014 work plan of the
National Council on Shelter Belt and Afforestation aimed at implementing
the the Great Green Wall Initiative.
Supervising Minister of Environment,
Darius Ishaku, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end
of the council’s third meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi
Sambo.
Ishaku said the council also resolved
that work should start from the Northern states of Adamawa, Bauchi,
Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Zamfara and Borno.
He said the work would start from Arewa Local Government in Kebbi State to Abadam Local Government in Borno State.
He said, “The Great Green Wall is the
1,500 kilometre length Green wall of 15 kilometres and it runs across
the border between Nigeria and the other neighbouring countries of the
northern front zone.
“The Great Green wall is strategised to
provide an international green belt and we are also using it to create
work for our youths. Several youth have been engaged in the work of the
Great Green wall and we are also trying to provide seedlings that are
economic trees and that are beneficiary and can also be of economic
benefit to the people.”
