Controversy
has continued to trail the Ebonyi State local government elections
scheduled to hold on Saturday, (today), following the order of stay of
execution and pendency of a suit by the All Progressives Congress
against the poll at the Court of Appeal, Enugu.
Chairman of Ebonyi State Independent
Electoral Commission, Mr. John Nkwuda, had told journalists that three
political parties fielded candidates for the poll, and stated that his
commission was ready to conduct the election, which was postponed from
September 28 to October 5, 2013.
Meanwhile, stakeholders of APC, led by Mr. Enyi Enyi, denied that the party fielded any candidate.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday,
he said that the party had been in court challenging the legality of the
open ballot system, which, he said, violated both the Electoral Act
2010 and the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
Enyi, who was flanked by Dr. Sylvester
Nwambe, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze and Aloysius Nwibo, insisted that the
APC would not take part in the election.
He demanded from the EBSIEC chairman an
explanation of who the phony candidates were, saying, “The APC had no
valid executive committee, it could not have sent any names to the
electoral body.”
