Manqoba Mngqithi has become the second managerial casualty of the new Premier Soccer League season, surprisingly quitting as coach of Lamontville Golden Arrows less than a day after he upset Bidvest Wits 3-2 in the opening game of this year’s Telkom Knockout.
An official, and rambling, statement, on the Arrows website was posted on Saturday afternoon and said: “The Head Coach of Lamontville Golden Arrows Football Club, Mr. Manqoba has taken a decision to step down as the head coach of the club.
“Mr. Mngqithi took this decision in view of the fact that results have not been forthcoming for the club despite the hard work and effort that he has invested in the position since the beginning of the season.
“In response to questions, Manqoba commented that he took this decision in the best interest of the club.”
The statement then seems quotes him as saying: “The current situation is not through lack of trying or anything like that. When results are not forthcoming it becomes a situation which one needs to be realistic about it, and make decisions which are for the good of the entire club.
“Sometimes a change can have a positive effect and change the fortunes of a club. “This is a club which has great potential and I believe it is only a question of time before things improve.
“I have enjoyed my time here and worked well with the management and the players. It is always difficult to make decisions such as these but I honestly believe I am acting in the best interests of everyone here and I know that there is appreciation for the fact that I have put the interests of the club first.”
The statement then concluded: “ The club has accepted Mr. Mngqithi decision and takes this opportunity to wish him well with his future endeavours.”
The news comes after Arrows posted an impressive come from behind win at Wits on Friday to take up a place in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinal.
Mngqithi’s departure follows the sacking of Duncan Lechesa by Polokwane City last month.
