Retired Cameroon international Roger Milla has expressed his desire to see Samuel Eto’o return to the national team and participate in the knockout stage of the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying following reports of the player’s decision to quit international football.
The local press had reported that Eto’o, 32, who recently joined London club Chelsea from Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, told teammates he was leaving the Indomitable Lions fold immediately after their 1-0 win over Libya on September 8 in Yaoundé.
However, many observers and officials in the central African country deem it as a bluff from the striker, and team coach Volker Finke, who has refused to confirm Eto’o’s decision, has included the former Barcelona and Inter forward in his initial 25-man squad for the Tunisia clash.
“If I’m asked to go and bring Eto’o back home I’d do it freely and with pleasure,” Roger Milla said on Monday.
“Even if he has decided to longer play for Cameroon, he should come first and honour the call up. To me, Eto’o is still a member of Cameroon national team and we are seriously counting on him for qualification to the Brazil 2014. I urge him to come and be with his mates and help us qualify.”
Eto’o is yet to confirm his presence for the first leg against Tunisia, which is scheduled for October 13 in Rades.
