Financial boost for Bayelsa United

It has now been revealed that unusual financial motivation has been responsible for the meteoric rise of Bayelsa United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.
United are currently top of the NPFL log after their 1-0 win over Warri Wolves at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa on match day 35 thanks to Azubuike Okechukwu’s goal on 50 minutes.
Head coach of United, Ladan Bosso has now revealed the secret of his side’s success this season as he praised the management of the club for ensuring that “players have been kept very happy.”
“We needed to win this match more than Warri Wolves because we were aware of the fact that three points would take us to the top of the league if Kano Pillars and Enyimba did not win,” Bosso told supersport.com.
The former Nigeria Under-20 national team coach added that the match bonuses of the player have been increased by a hundred percent following the recent purple patch hit by the club.


“Previously, the players were paid N30,000 ($185 USD) for a win but that has been double and they now receive N60,000 (about $370 USD) for a win.
“The players discuss amongst themselves before games and declare that they cannot allow such an amount of money to slip through their fingers.
“The players have been kept very happy and you can see the rewards of that by our current position on the league table,” he said.
United’s final three fixtures of the season are against Kaduna United (in Kaduna), Kwara United (in Yenagoa) and Gombe United (in Gombe).
With two potentially tricky road trips to navigate, Bosso knows it would be no procession to deliver the club a second league title following their solitary success in 2009.
“Everyone knows how difficult it is to win away from home in the Nigerian league but we have won away points this season; many of which we were expected to lose so I believe anything can still happen,” he said.
