Fadlu Davids will take temporary charge of Maritzburg United in the wake of the departure of Ernst Middendorp while the club look for a new coach.
The club said Davids would be in charge over the next days while a decision on a replacement is made.
He served as assistant to Middendorp, who sprung a surprise on the club on Thursday by quitting to take over at Bloemfontein Celtic.
Davids gave up his career last season to take a place next to the German coach on the bench.
Maritzburg do not play again until Wednesday, October 23 when they host SuperSport United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
Maritzburg plan a short list of candidates and will be contacting prospective candidates in coming days. But they have also said they do not want to rush the process.
Middendorp had been coach at Maritzburg for two separate spells. During their time in the Absa Premiership the club have also had Trott Moloto, Kosta Papic, Vladislav Heric, Mlungisi Ngubane, Gordon Igesund and Ian Palmer in charge.
