A husband and wife have been killed after their light aircraft came down in the sea off the coast of Jersey.
Carl Whiteley and his wife Kathryn, from Derbyshire, were on board a
Cessna plane when it crashed five miles west of the island's airport.Police said an operation was under way to recover their bodies, while an airport spokesman confirmed some parts of the wreckage had been retrieved.
Mr Whiteley and his wife are believed to have been returning home from northern France when the accident happened.
His colleagues at Derby-based financial advisers Belmont Regency, where he had worked for more than 30 years, described him as "a close friend who will be greatly missed".
"The fondest memories will remain with myself and our staff of our dear departed colleague," managing director Brett Hannon added.
Mr and Mrs Whiteley took off from Dinan airport and had been due to land in Jersey when they lost radio contact.
The search for the couple involved lifeboats and a search and rescue helicopter, as well as Navy frigate HMS Northumberland and several private boats.
It is not known how long Mr Whiteley had been flying for, although his LinkedIn page lists aviation as one of his hobbies and states that he holds a multi-engine instrument pilot licence.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, although visibility is believed to have been poor - just 200 metres in places - at the time of the accident.
